How To Learn To Surf
Surfing is like other sports. You learn the basics then continuously improve on them as you partake in the sport. Learning the basics well gives a solid foundation on which to build your expertise. Without that .. there is no foundation to build on. The Rules ... the first basics to learn. Be aware of the rules before even contemplating a board. They are all based on common sense and common courtesy. The rule of nature is the first rule to be fully aware of at all times. Never surf where you are not familiar with the top and bottom of the water. Always be aware of the rip currents and the waves. The conscientious rules are the next to learn. Never ever stand up on a breaking wave another surfer is already standing up on. This is a form of "the early bird gets the worm" rule. He "owns" that wave. Should you stand up on a wave at the same time as another surfer .. compromise if possible.. ride the wave together.. or step down... the best thing to do. NO wave is worth a confrontation. Never ever jump in on a wave in front of a surfer already riding that wave. This is a call for serious trouble. If paddling.. be always aware of surfers around you .. staying out of their way. If you are surfing and suddenly come on a paddler... move out of his way. NO wave is worth a life. The Right Board.. the second basic to learn. For your fist board .. think practical... very practical. Cheap works best here... used... hand-me -down.. borrowed. A board that will safely allow you to experiment with the beginning maneuvers.. like how to sit on it.. without having to worry about dinging it is the best one to use here. You will have plenty of time as a "pro" to get your "showmanship " in gear. Right now you need to learn how to sit, paddle, then stand up on a board. Looks don't count at all. So.. choose the right board for you.
